On December 19, tvN aired the first episode of Reply 1988 10th Anniversary, documenting the Ssangmun-dong families’ one-night, two-day reunion trip to Gangwon Province. Before heading out, the cast gathered in Gapyeong, opening the special by showcasing the chemistry of each family.

During the opening segment, the families of Dong-ryong (Yoo Jae-myung, Lee Dong-hwi), Taek (Choi Moo-sung, Park Bo-gum), and Sun-woo (Kim Sun-young, Go Kyung-pyo) reunited at the same location. While chatting, Go Kyung-pyo remarked, “Jinju has grown up so much now,” already hinting at the surprise to come.

Moments later, Kim Seol appeared as a surprise guest, instantly leaving the cast stunned. Once just four years old during the original broadcast of Reply 1988, Kim Seol has now grown into a second-year middle school student, showcasing a striking transformation that no one expected.

The sight of Jinju all grown up deeply moved her on-screen family. Kim Sun-young and Go Kyung-pyo were visibly emotional, eventually shedding tears as they reunited with the young actress, creating one of the episode’s most touching moments.

Hyeri and Park Bo-gum were also reportedly amazed by Kim Seol’s transformation, with viewers sharing in the cast’s disbelief at how quickly time had passed.

Previously, in the highlight video released on December 11, the five iconic families are seen enjoying an outing that perfectly preserves the warm, retro mood of 1988. Despite the passage of time, their chemistry, fashion, and easygoing interactions recreate the familiar charm that fans have dearly missed. Their seaside trip to Gangwon Province features games, meals, and long chats that fill in the gaps of the past decade.

The distinctive dynamics between the families also shine through. The Jungbong family reunites with Ryu Jun-yeol joining Ra Mi-ran, Kim Sung-kyun, and fan-favorite couple Ahn Jae-hong and Lee Min-ji. In one scene, Kim Sung-kyun jokes to Ra Mi-ran, “Looks like you hit the lottery again,” echoing their memorable storyline and drawing nostalgic laughter.

The Deok-sun family is as lively as ever. Sung Dong-il, Lee Il-hwa, Ryu Hye-young, Hyeri, and Choi Sung-won immediately recreate their bustling household atmosphere. When his two daughters break into dance, Sung Dong-il grumbles, “Didn’t I tell you to stop doing that?” a moment that perfectly mirrors the show’s beloved family humor.

Reply 1988 10th Anniversary also marks tvN’s 20th anniversary edition and will premiere on December 19 at 8:40 p.m.
