Reasons “7 Escape” Is Losing Its Appeal To Viewers Despite Its Large Production Cost

Making various efforts, “7 Escape” eventually fell behind “My Dearest” in terms of ratings

The drama competition officially resumed last Friday (October 13th) after the end of the Asian Games. MBC’s “My Dearest” also made a comeback with Part 2. To face “My Dearest” head-to-head, “7 Escape” started 20 minutes early at 9:40 p.m. Just as “My Dearest 2” increased the broadcasting time of its episode to 1 hour and 20 minutes, “7 Escape” also made a longer broadcast.

However, “My Dearest” eventually took the lead in the rating competition. The first episode of Part 2 recorded 7.7% and soared to 9.3% in the second episode. On the other hand, “7 Escape” fell slightly from 6.8% to 6.5%.

In addition, “7 Escape” is also facing a crisis that the main director Joo Dong-min has dropped out of the project. Therefore, co-director Oh Jun-hyuk will be in charge of directing the series from now on. Considering the criticism surrounding “7 Escape”, including poor CG effects, absurd story developments, and exaggerated acting performances, the responsibility of the director to be involved in all of these parts is considered huge. As such, although they decided to replace the director, it is still hard for the drama to reverse ratings.

In fact, many people pointed out that the biggest problem is the script by writer Kim Soon-ok. The revenge story, which was supposed to bring a sense of satisfaction to viewers, is making the viewers feel even more angry and begin to ‘escape’ from “7 Escape”.

7 Escape

“7 Escape” is said to be full of monstrous characters that are beyond villains, such as a high school student giving birth at school, a mother who strangled her daughter for her own desires and abetted death, a teacher who helps a student framing another student to hide her own wrongdoing, etc., and various provocative details. As the story progressed, the stimulus quickly became boring and made viewers feel exhausted. Reality is already frustrating, so there is no reason for viewers to look for stories full of anger-inducing characters. As such, the toxic world created by Kim Soon-ok is said to be a complete ignorance of viewers.

In addition, what’s more disastrous is that such a drama was made with a large production budget of 46 billion won. The failure of a drama with such a big production cost may even have a negative effect on the entire drama ecosystem. Since viewers have never asked for such crazy and unrealistic stories in the first place, they are pouring concerns over the possibility that “7 Escape” would destroy the formal framework of a drama.
