A song released in 2013 went viral again and even topped the Melon chart
On December 21st, EXO’s “The First Snow” took No.1 on TOP 100 chart of Korea’s largest music streaming platform Melon. In fact, the song has been unusually climbing backward on charts during the past weeks on not only the Melon TOP 100 chart but also the daily rankings.
EXO released “The First Snow” in December 2013, exactly 10 years ago. It surpassed all the popular songs recently, such as LE SSERAFIM’s “Perfect Night”, aespa’s “Drama” and Taeyeon’s To.X”, to reach the No.1 spot.
Known as a b-side track in EXO’s 2013 winter special album, “The First Snow” is a sentimental acoustic pop song that reminds us of our first love. Due to the warm atmosphere conveyed through the melody and the lyrics, this song has entered music charts in winter every year. However, this is the first time it even rose to No.1.
Explaining the reason why “The First Snow” suddenly became so viral that it even topped music charts, SM Entertainment official said, “With the addition of some simple dances to the chorus part of ‘The First Snow’, ‘The First Snow Challenge’ gained huge popularity and became a trend on social media (Tiktok, YouTube, etc.)”.
As such, celebrities and famous K-pop idols, such as aespa, IVE, NCT DREAM, etc., also joined The First Snow Challenge and led the trend. Recently, EXO members also filmed ‘The First Snow Challenge’ videos by themselves.
Apart from “The First Snow”, various Christmas songs, such as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, “Jelly Christmas” by Sung Si-kyung, Park Hyo-shin, Lee Seok-hoon, Seo In-guk and VIXX, IU’s “Merry Christmas Ahead”, Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me”, Sia’s “Snowman”, etc., have also entered the charts again ahead of the Christmas holiday.
