Despite failing to surpass 450,000 moviegoers during its theatrical release, the Korean comedy Pretty Crazy is experiencing an unexpected resurgence thanks to Netflix.
As of December 2, the film has skyrocketed to the No.1 spot on Netflix Korea’s “Top 10 Movies Today” chart. Starring YoonA (Girls’ Generation) and Ahn Bo Hyun, the movie tells the quirky tale of Gil-goo, an unemployed man who takes a bizarre part-time job monitoring Seon-ji, a woman who transforms into a devil every night.

Directed by Lee Sang-geun, who previously helmed the hit Exit (9.42 million admissions), the film drew early attention with its star-studded cast including Sung Dong-il and Joo Hyun-young. However, upon its release in August, it underperformed at the box office, drawing just 430,000 viewers, partially due to tough competition from zombie hit My Daughter Is a Zombie (5.63 million viewers).
Now gaining traction on streaming, the film has overtaken top-ranking titles like Commission and Mercy for None, winning praise for its unique concept and the leads’ chemistry.
Ahn Bo Hyun, who played Gil-goo, recently earned Best New Actor at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards for his performance. Shedding his usual intense image, he impressed audiences with his transformation into a warm-hearted, clumsy neighbor. On stage, he expressed surprise and gratitude, saying, “Playing Gil-goo made me happy. I take this award as a reminder to stay grounded and work harder.” He also thanked YoonA, saying, “She really made me shine.”

YoonA, who portrayed the devil-possessed Seon-ji, was nominated for Best Actress and won the Popular Star Award at the same ceremony. She expressed her love for the film, saying, “I’m thrilled to receive this award for a project I truly adore. Thank you to everyone who voted.” Her joy was doubled when Ahn won his award, cheering him on with genuine excitement.
In Pretty Crazy, YoonA seamlessly switches between angelic and demonic personas, captivating viewers with her versatile charm. Reflecting on her reunion with director Lee Sang-geun from Exit, she noted, “The script felt like a fairy tale, and I could really feel the director’s unique style.” Playing dual roles, she added, “It was fun flipping between such contrasting characters it expanded my creative freedom.”

Audiences have been equally charmed, with comments like, “YoonA and Ahn Bo Hyun have surprising comedic chemistry,” “Trust YoonA for comedy,” and “If the devil looks like YoonA, please move in.”
Pretty Crazy is now streaming on Netflix, finally receiving the attention it deserves after its theatrical underdog run.
