Popular Japanese Drama Accused Of Plagiarizing “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” By Japanese Media

Recently, the Japanese media outlet “Saijo Women” raised suspicions that the Japanese drama “Alice in Wonderful Kitchen” plagiarized “Extraordinary Atteney Woo” and pointed five similarities between the two.

According to the media outlet, Alice, the main character of “Alice in Wonderful Kitchen,” is a woman suffering from autism just like Woo Young-woo, the main character of “Extraordinary Atteney Woo.” Alice is a chef with genius abilities, and once she explains about food, she continues talking endlessly. This is similar to Woo Young-woo, who can’t stop when she starts talking about whales.

It is also similar that Alice is raised by a single father like Woo Young-woo, and the setting that her friend, Kazusa Mitsuzawa, was a bad student but became close with Alice after saving her from being bullied, also reminds viewers of Woo Young-wok’s story. In both dramas, the protagonist turns out to be the daughter of a CEO of a large company.

Finally, just as Woo Young-woo falls in love with her colleague Lee Jun-ho, Alice is attracted to part-timer Kosei. Both Kosei and Lee Jun-ho are confused by the main character’s words and actions, but fall in love with her talent.

“Alice in Wonderful Kitchen” seems to be doing well locally. The first episode, which aired on Jan. 21, had an average household rating of 6.2%. However, local broadcasters seem to be aware of the similarity with “Extraordinary Attorney Woo.”

Meanwhile, ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ was a huge hit, topping Netflix rankings in Japan. Park Eun-bin, who plays the lead role, also had a fan meeting in Japan in November 2022 and May 2023 after the show ended.
