In a drama where Korea National University of Arts alumni like Kim Go-eun (Class of 2010) and Kim Gun-woo (Class of 2012) dominate, Park Ji-hyun — a Spanish major from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies who entered acting later — has managed to carve out a name for herself. Her latest performance proves she can hold her own even among the most seasoned acting talents.
On September 12, Netflix released its series You and Everything Else, where Park Ji-hyun takes on the role of Cheon Sang-yeon. Born into privilege but constantly envying the things her friend Eun-jung (Kim Go-eun) possessed, Sang-yeon is portrayed as a deeply layered character whose journey spans from her 20s to 40s. While child actors covered their teenage years, Park and Kim seamlessly carried the story through adulthood, painting an intricate portrait of friendship, rivalry, love, and loss.

Sang-yeon’s character arc is both turbulent and tragic. After losing her brother, her family collapses, and university life becomes a place of competition and jealousy alongside Eun-jung. Later, as a film producer, Sang-yeon enjoys fame and accolades, only to reappear in her 40s as a terminally ill patient requesting assisted death from her once-envied friend. Park Ji-hyun’s subdued yet powerful delivery — from hollow stares to restrained emotions — infused the role with a sense of raw humanity and aching vulnerability.

This marks a turning point for Park Ji-hyun, who once faced heavy criticism for her stiff acting, notably in SBS’s Flex X Cop last year, where she was labeled miscast. At that time, her performance was seen as breaking immersion. But in You and Everything Else, she masterfully captures nearly three decades of a woman’s life, balancing fragility with resilience in a way that resonates with viewers.
Though today’s K-dramas rarely exceed 12 episodes, the series stretches to 15. Yet thanks to the universality of its themes — we all know an “Eun-jung” or “Sang-yeon” in our lives — audiences are likely to find themselves emotionally invested until the very last scene.
