“Our Beloved Summer” Kim Da-mi: “Like Kook Yeon-soo, I always hide what I feel”

“Our Beloved Summer” is over, but the aftertaste still lingers. We met Kim Da-mi (26) through a non-face-to-face interview to talk about the drama.

  • How do you feel?

After the drama ended, the emptiness began. I had a happy year because I sent a lot of love to everyone.

  • Where did you focus on while acting?

I focused on the process of growth from high school students to adults. I tried to show a variety of styles that are different from Jo Yi-seo in my previous work “Itaewon Class”. When I first received the script, the character’s emotional lines were great, so I read it quickly. I tried to show a lot of everyday things.

  • Our Beloved Summer” gave off a calm, quiet feeling yet became very popular. What do you think is the reason behind this?

Realistic? It may be fantasy-like because it’s so realistic, but it seems that all the characters are loved because there is a lot to sympathize with and there are no villains.

  • You played dark characters in the movie “The Witch” (2018) and the drama “Itaewon Class” (2020). However, you played an ordinary character this time.

I tried to adapt to the set as much as possible. How can I make the chemistry with Woong look natural? Our ten-year relationship. This helped me catch the character Kook Yeon-soo.

  • Is there a scene or line that you still remember?

The line “You are the only one I can throw away” remains in my memory. It was a heartbreaking moment, and it contained various emotions. The scene where Kook Yeon-soo picks up cherry blossoms and sprays on Woong is the initial scene that best describes the character Kook Yeon-soo. She’s not interested in romantic things. This is the only thing she can do for him. It’s Kook Yeon-soo’s only method. The kiss scene with Woong on the hill is also memorable due to the good location.

  • You worked with Choi Woo-sik in “The Witch”. Was there a synergy effect?

Our chemistry was good. We knew each other and were already close, so the first shoot was natural even if we didn’t have time to get to know each other. It was fun as if we met as high school friends. While working as Woong and Yeon-soo, we had so much fun filming that I wondered if there would have been Yeon-soo without Woong. I can do well in various ways with Woo-sik. It seems like we would become a comfortable married couple or film a deep melodrama.

  • How is the synchronization between Yeon-soo and Da-mi?

60~70%. It is similar to me in real life that Yeon-soo always hides what she feels. However, Yeon-soo’s story has some differences from mine.

  • Yeon-soo says goodbye to Woong first.

Yeon-soo has to let go of the person she loves in difficult times. I would have done the same. Yeon-soo wouldn’t have wanted to give the other person something heavy. Of course, if it were me, we would have talked a little more.

  • People say “It feels like I’m actually in a romantic relationship” and call it “memory manipulation romance”.

The story of Yeon-soo and Woong is both realistic and fantasy. Rather than recalling my school days, I tried to act as if I was in Yeon-soo’s situation.

  • Yeon-soo only looks at Woong, but what would have happened if Ji-ung (Kim Sung-cheol) had confessed to Yeon-soo?

They will always remain as friends. Like Yeon-soo, I like Woong who only looks at one person and does his best.
