SM Entertainment girl group f(x) was once expected to make history, only to get ignored by their own company
A new wind in Kpop
In 2009, SM Entertainment introduced the Kpop girl group f(x) – a name which represents the numerous variables and versatility of the group’s members. If all goes according to plan, SM will make f(x) the most unique girl group there is, and bring their name around the world.
Almost immediately, f(x) managed to make a deep impression with their distinctive sound and music. They also adorned one-of-a-kind outfits and kick-started styling trends, while Kpop fans got addicted to f(x)’s debut song “LA chA TA” – which perfectly combined girlboss and feminine vibes.
f(x) was also among the first Kpop girl groups to introduce a “tomboy” member – Amber, while others also showed overwhelming talents. Their next songs, like “Hot Summer”, went on to become massive hits in Korea.
The crisis of f(x)
After resounding successes, f(x) was expected to make history, only for them to go on a prolonged hiatus. This is soon followed by Sulli’s departure from the group and Victoria’s Chinese activities, sending f(x) into a crisis.
At the time, many netizens believed that SM abandoned the group after experimenting with them, and had no plans for f(x) to go further. Even the members were separated at the lack of activities, and to make it worse, SM turned down all fan requests for a special event to celebrate the group’s 10th year anniversary. In the end, all members ended up leaving SM Entertainment one by one.
And it seems that f(x) being forgotten is no speculation, according to an interview between Daum and 2 CEOs from SM. In particular, the CEOs were asked about the achievements of SM Entertainment across the years, and they started to mention all the artists. However, while groups like H.O.T., S.E.S, BoA , Shinhwa, and more, were all included, f(x), along with their senior girl group The Grace (CSJH), were completely forgotten. This leaves fans enraged, as f(x) used to have immense impact, and their contribution to SM Entertainment is neither minute nor ignorable.
Once expected to become a top Kpop girl group, f(x)’s career fell into an unfortunate decline due to SM’s mismanagement.
