North Korean Defector Joins K-pop Survival Show, Discloses Touching Journey

A trainee from the new K-pop survival show “Make Mate 1” is drawing attention with his story as a North Korean defector. 

On May 15, the 1st episode for KBS’s new K-pop survival show, “Make Mate 1”, was released. So far, one trainee from the show has stood out due to his background of being a North Korean defector. 

Particularly, the trainee in question is Kim Hakseong, born in 2004, and his keyword used for introduction was “escaped from the North”, surprising fellow trainees.

According to Kim Hakseong, he escaped from North Korea and came to South Korea in 2017, when he was about 13 years old. 

The trainee then mentioned his reason for wanting to become an idol, saying, “As I first arrived in South Korea, adjusting to society was my biggest problem. In my new residence, I watched a lot of TV and was impressed with K-pop idols, so I started to dream to become one myself”.

Kim Hakseong also revealed that it was “stressful” to recall his story of escape, and even started to get emotional as he told his tale. 

Listening to Kim Hakseong’s words, many trainees and judges couldn’t help but shed tears, especially when the North Korean trainee mentioned that he want to “give hope” to people in tough circumstances unable to pursue their dreams.
