NewJeans appears on “Kohaku Uta Gassen” before debut in Japan “Special treatment”

According to Japanese media outlets such as Sankei Sports on Dec 29th, NewJeans will appear at the “74th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen” to be held at the NHK Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo on Dec 31st.

Not having officially debuted in Japan yet, NewJeans’ participation in “Kohaku Uta Gassen” is considered highly unusual for foreign artists in such a situation.

The group is likely to have a recorded performance, given their prior commitment to perform on ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2024”.

NewJeans is expected to be allocated a prime time slot around 10 PM despite being their first appearance, indicating special treatment.

The group is currently staying in Japan and recently appeared on Nippon TV’s year-end music program “Annual Music Awards 2023”.

They are also scheduled to perform at TBS’s “Japan Record Awards”, where they are the first foreign artist nominated for the grand prize.

The group’s inclusion in “Kohaku Uta Gassen” highlights their global recognition, and their participation adds to the K-pop celebration of the event, with other popular groups like Seventeen, Stray Kids and Twice’s unit MiSaMo also making appearances.

J-Idol groups created under the K-pop system, such as NiziU and JO1, will also join the lineup, showcasing a mix of local and global talents.

Notably, artists associated with the talent agency Smile-Up, which faced controversy related to the exploitation of trainees by its founder Johnny Kitagawa, have been excluded from this year’s event.
