New tvN Drama “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” Criticized For Normalizing Teacher’s Drunk Driving

The drama is facing black-lash because of this scene.

A scene of the lead drunk driving was depicted in the lateral episode of tvN’s ”The Midnight Romance in Hagwon,” which aired on May 19th. In this episode, Jung Ryeo-won (playing the role of Seo Hye-jin) had a drink with a fellow teacher. In particular, Jung Ryeo-won opened the lid of soju and poured a glass. She was surprised by his colleague’s words and drank again and again. After the drinking party, Jung immediately goes back to the academy and prepares for the lecture with her junior colleague Wi Ha-joon (playing Lee Jun-ho). After the lecture, Jung drove her car to take Wi Ha-joon home, and she, too, went back home.

In Korea, drunk driving is considered a potential murder act. In fact, there are constant calls for strong punishment, or permanent expulsion from the entertainment industry for drunk driving. This is the reason why the drama is being heavily criticized. Some even point out that the driver could have been changed to Wi Ha-joon, since Wi had only been drinking coffee in the scene.

Moreover, while “The Midnight Romance in Hagwon” is highly anticipated, its outcome is humiliating. The first and second episodes had an easy start with 5.2% viewer rating, but the rating fell to 3% in the third episode. Fortunately, the figure has recovered somewhat to 4.8% in the fourth episode, but remains unstable. Compared to the stellar performance of the cast and director, the rating was not good enough.
