Netizens Mistook Red Velvet’s Joy For Other Female Idols In New Teaser Due To SM’s Overedit

SM Entertainment recently revealed 2 sets of teaser photos for Red Velvet’s 10th debut anniversary comeback with the album “COSMIC”. The teasers were shot in two concepts, princesses and sailors.

Unlike the enthusiastic cheers and compliments for the sailor concept, controversy sparked as soon as the princess teasers were released. Wearing fancy dresses against a dreamy background, Red Velvet members showed off their goddess-like visuals. However, many fans couldn’t recognize Joy in her individual photos. The new makeup style and SM’s excessive edits made Joy look unfamiliar. 

Some even mistook Joy for other idols, such as (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon & Soojin, KISS OF LIFE’s Belle, IVE’s Jang Won-young, NMIXX’s Sullyoon, etc. In addition to Joy’s teasers, Wendy’s images also received comments complaining about her unrecognized face.

Netizens commented, “Her lips and hairstyle made me think of Soyeon, but Soyeon’s eyes are sharper. But didn’t Joy have eye surgery a few months ago? Maybe that’s why people can’t recognize her”, “I thought she was former (G)I-DLE member Soojin”, “She looks like Sullyoon and Wonyoung”, etc.

In addition to their excessive edits, SM is also facing a backlash from Red Velvet for their poor promotion of the group’s 10th debut anniversary album, from announcing the comeback late to simple album cover design, to not having a special version for an anniversary album, unlike their previous comebacks.
