Netflix’s highly anticipated K-drama Can This Love Be Translated? is drawing intense criticism even before its release, as controversy surrounding its male lead and second male lead ignites online backlash. The series, starring Go Youn Jung and Kim Seon Ho, unveiled its official poster and teaser on December 17, 2025 (KST), only to be met with polarized responses from Korean viewers.
Kim Seon Ho, cast as the male lead, remains a contentious figure following his widely publicized 2021 scandal. Although some fans support his return, many netizens continue to express discomfort with his casting in high-profile projects—especially alongside a rising star like Go Youn Jung. Critics have described the pairing as awkward, with comments ranging from “they don’t even look good together” to frustration over Kim’s continued presence in lead roles despite past controversies.

Adding to the uproar is the inclusion of Japanese actor Sota Fukushi as the second male lead. His appearance in a 2015 documentary, Please Teach Us About The War, where he expressed admiration for his grandfather’s connection to the WWII-era kamikaze unit, has sparked concerns. Korean viewers have labeled him as a “right-wing” nationalist, accusing him of glorifying Japan’s military history—a particularly sensitive topic in Korea. His casting in a romantic K-drama role has thus been met with sharp criticism and calls for boycotts.

Compounding the issue is the fact that the drama is penned by the Hong Sisters, screenwriters who have previously faced allegations of plagiarism. This has led to widespread labeling of the show as “problematic,” with social media filled with sentiments such as “Why even make a show like this?” and “There’s nothing appealing—from the writers to the actors.”

Despite its promising visuals and a popular female lead, Can This Love Be Translated? faces an uphill battle for public approval. With ongoing disapproval over its casting choices and creative direction, some viewers have already vowed to skip its premiere. The drama is set to release on January 16, 2026, but unless perceptions shift dramatically, it risks being overshadowed by its controversies before it even airs.
