NCT’s Jaemin Under Fire for Criticizing EXO’s Baekhyun’s Album

On August 16, a controversy erupted between the fandoms of EXO and NCT when an audio clip was circulated in which Jaemin from NCT bluntly criticized the album of his senior and labelmate, EXO’s Baekhyun—specifically, the “City Lights” album.

Particularly, during a livestream celebrating NCT Dream’s 3rd debut anniversary, the group mentioned Baekhyun’s “City Lights” album. While Jisung proudly shared that he had listened to the entire album, Jaemin commented, “I’ve listened to it, but it didn’t sound that great.” Then, when the members asked each other about their favorite tracks from the album, Na Jaemin admitted, “I haven’t listened to the whole thing yet.”

Upon discovering this footage, fans of Baekhyun felt that Jaemin’s remarks were disrespectful towards his senior. The controversy even caused hashtags related to the incident and songs from the “City Lights” album to trend in South Korea.

In response to the backlash, NCT Dream’s fans argued that the audio clip had been edited and that Jaemin’s words weren’t as harsh as they seemed. Despite this, the anger from EXO’s fandom has not subsided. While Jaemin may have been innocent and sincere in his comments, his decision to critique a senior’s album—especially one from the same company—during a livestream with thousands of fans watching was seen as disrespectful and impolite.

Below are some comments from netizens:

  • He should at least show some respect to his senior.
  • The line between being straightforward and being rude is very thin.
  • As an idol, Jaemin needs to think carefully before saying anything.
  • Jaemin may not have meant anything with his comments, but he needs to learn how to behave appropriately.
  • Criticizing a senior’s album during a livestream was already a mistake.
