“National Tax Service’s promotional ambassador” Han Hyo Joo reportedly fined 60 million won in a tax investigation

BH Entertainment’s actress Han Hyo Joo was reportedly fined 60 million won in taxes by the tax authorities.

According to Ajou Economy on June 12th, the Investigation Division of Seoul Regional Tax Office (Seoul Office) confirmed the result of their irregular tax investigation against Han Hyo Joo at the end of last year that the actress had underreported taxes, and imposed a fine of approximately 60 million won.

Earlier in September last year, the Tax Investigation Division conducted a tax investigation into Han Hyo Joo’s agency BH Entertainment and collected hundreds of millions of won in taxes. BH is a management company founded by actor Lee Byung Hun in 2006. Han Hyo Joo has been working under BH since 2009. In 2018, BH handed over 100% of its shares to Kakao Entertainment (formerly Kakao M) and is currently a subsidiary of Kakao.

The agency stated that the National Tax Service’s additional fine imposed on Han Hyo Joo was merely due to a difference in views on handling costs and it was not an intentional tax evasion.

Meanwhile, Han Hyo Joo purchased a building in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul in May 2018 under the name of a corporation. The representative of the corporation was Han Hyo Joo’s father, but this corporation had no registered address, sparking suspicions of a paper company.

In addition, Han Hyo Joo previously purchased a 5.5-billion-won building with a basement floor and two ground floors in Hannam-dong in 2017. According to reports, the actress sold the building in early 2021 for about 8 billion won, making 2.5 billion won in profits.

In 2011, Han Hyo Joo was selected as an exemplary taxpayer on the 45th Taxpayer’s Day. She received a presidential commendation and was even appointed as a promotional ambassador for the National Tax Service. In 2018, she was chosen as an exemplary taxpayer again at the 52nd Taxpayer’s Day and honored with a commendation by the head of the Seoul Regional Tax Office.
