The man convicted of breaking into the home of singer-actress Nana has officially appealed his seven-year prison sentence.
According to reports, the defendant, identified only as Mr. A, personally submitted an appeal on June 10 after being sentenced to seven years in prison for robbery and assault-related offenses. The ruling was handed down by the Namyangju Branch of the Uijeongbu District Court on June 9. Prosecutors had originally sought a 10-year prison term, arguing that the defendant showed no genuine remorse and had failed to reach a settlement with the victims.
In its ruling, the court determined that the defendant unlawfully entered Nana’s residence at night while carrying a knife and attempted to commit robbery. The court accepted testimony from the victims and other evidence indicating that the defendant possessed the weapon with the intent to use it during the crime. Judges concluded that the defendant committed robbery and assault against Nana’s mother and that the incident constituted an extremely serious offense due to the use of a weapon and the invasion of a private residence.
The court stated: “The defendant entered a residence at night while carrying a dangerous weapon and committed robbery-related crimes. Given the seriousness of the offense, a substantial punishment is unavoidable.”
A major issue during the trial involved injuries sustained by the defendant during the confrontation. The court ruled that Nana’s actions constituted legitimate self-defense. According to the ruling, even if Nana wounded the intruder during the struggle, those injuries resulted from efforts to protect herself and her mother from an armed attacker. The judges rejected the defendant’s claims that he had been unlawfully attacked, finding instead that the victims acted to prevent further harm.
Throughout the trial, the defendant admitted to trespassing but denied bringing a knife into the residence and rejected accusations that he threatened or assaulted Nana and her mother. He claimed he only intended to steal property and insisted that he never physically attacked the victims. The defendant also alleged that Nana’s mother injured him during the confrontation and argued that he was acting defensively while trying to avoid further harm.
However, the court ultimately found the victims’ testimony to be credible and consistent, rejecting the defendant’s version of events.
During a court hearing in April, Nana appeared as a witness alongside her mother and openly confronted the defendant. According to reports, she asked him directly: “Is this fun for you? Look me in the eyes. Is this fun?” Nana later revealed that the incident left lasting psychological scars. She testified that while she initially thought she had recovered from the ordeal, she eventually realized the experience had become a form of trauma that continues to affect her life.
After the hearing, Nana told fans that she did not regret confronting the defendant and felt relieved to finally express her feelings in court.
Following the sentencing, Nana shared a strongly worded statement on social media criticizing the defendant’s repeated changes in testimony and lack of accountability. She wrote that the victims had been forced to endure multiple court appearances while the defendant continued to offer inconsistent accounts of the incident.
Referencing the prosecution’s request for a 10-year sentence and the court’s final seven-year ruling, Nana emphasized: “There is no remorse. There is no forgiveness.” She also posted the phrase “You reap what you sow,” expressing her belief that the defendant should face the consequences of his actions.
With the defendant formally challenging the seven-year sentence, the case will move to the appellate stage. The appeal comes despite the trial court’s finding that the defendant committed a serious armed home invasion that left Nana and her mother with lasting physical and emotional distress. For now, the conviction remains in place while the higher court reviews the case.
