Nam Joo-hyuk’s first action challenge since debut “I’m a fan of webtoon ‘Vigilante'”

“Vigilante” Nam Joo-hyuk took on the challenge of action

On Oct 18th, Nam Joo-hyuk‘s character still cuts were released. Nam Joo-hyuk plays Kim Ji-yong, a perfect model police academy student by day and a dark hero who directly judges criminals by night, in Disney+’s drama “Vigilante” (written by Lee Min-seop, directed by Choi Jeong-yeol).

“Vigilante” follows a model student from the police academy who protects the law during the day, but at night lives as a “vigilante” and dispenses justice to criminals who evade the law.

Nam Joo-hyuk’s character, Kim Ji-yong, lost his mother to a brutal assault by a local gangster during his childhood. He decides to take justice into his own hands by punishing the delinquents who continue to commit crimes even after receiving mercy and being released from prison. Since that day, Kim Ji-yong judges the criminals who evade the law, creating justice in his own way. Nam Joo-hyuk plays the role of Kim Ji-yong, who is a perfect model police academy student during the day, excelling in martial arts, academics and daily life. However, at night, he becomes a ruthless and cold-hearted vigilante.

Nam Joo-hyuk, who is taking on his first action genre challenge with “Vigilante”, made significant efforts for realistic and gripping action scenes, including weight training, boxing, judo and martial arts training. He portrayed a two-faced character delicately, capturing the character’s transformation from an ordinary university student who looks no different from his peers to a character with a darker side, seen wearing a hood and expressing an inner conflict. The acting of Nam Joo-hyuk, who brought to life a complex character with mixed emotions, is expected to enhance the drama’s appeal.

Vigilante

Nam Joo-hyuk shared his enthusiasm for the project, “‘Vigilante’ was a webtoon that I really loved, and I wanted to take on the role of Kim Ji-yong. It’s my first action work, so I had many discussions with the martial arts team about the details. I felt that the feeling was quite different when I wore a police uniform and when I wore the vigilante outfit. When I acted as the vigilante, I tried to bring out a darker and more serious aspect rather than intense emotional expressions. I put a lot of effort into bringing out the multi-faceted aspects of the character.

Director Choi Jeong-yeol expressed his satisfaction with Nam Joo-hyuk’s casting, “I hoped that the actor who plays the protagonist Kim Ji-yong would have a look that well represented the boundary between good and evil, with eyes that sparkled and contained inner sadness. Nam Joo-hyuk portrayed the character excellently, and there were many moments of admiration.

Yoo Ji-tae, who plays the investigation team leader Jo Heon, complimented Nam Joo-hyuk, “Nam Joo-hyuk is an actor with many advantages to go beyond to the global stage.”

Expectations are rising for “Vigilante”, which will be available on Disney+ starting on Nov 8th.
