Mixed opinions about Soyeon’s high-pitched intro in (G)I-DLE’s “Super Lady”: “Killing part” vs “Noisy”

(G)I-DLE (Miyeon, Minnie, Soyeon, Yuqi, Shuhua) showcased their first comeback stage for the title track “Super Lady” from their new full-length album “2 (Two)” through Mnet’s “M Countdown” on Feb 1st.

On this day, (G)I-DLE, who appeared in a large-scale comeback stage, captivated the audience with an overwhelming atmosphere from their grand entrance. Soyeon’s unique aura, as she shouted “I am the top, super lady” with an unreachable high-pitched voice from the intro, particularly drew attention.

After the comeback stage, various opinions about Soyeon’s high-pitched intro flooded online communities. With a heightened interest in Soyeon’s intro after the release of the song, the response became even more fervent when the stage where Soyeon sang live was revealed.

Especially noteworthy was the fact that this part was handled by main rapper Soyeon instead of main vocalists Miyeon or Minnie within the team. In relation to this, Minnie attempted this part with Miyeon on a YouTube entertainment show but failed due to the difference in vocal range, leading to a behind-the-scenes commentary that only Soyeon could handle the part.

Against this backdrop, netizens’ reactions to Soyeon’s new challenge were fresh. They expressed positive views such as “Soyeon is the only one who can handle this vocal range“, “She sang the intro part well“, “The intro is a killing part“, “It’s refreshing and cool“, “The most memorable part” and “Soyeon’s vocal tone is really good.”

On the other hand, those who favored the existing vocal line of (G)I-DLE, such as Miyeon and Minnie, expressed discomfort. They commented, “It’s a barrier from the intro“, “It’s burdensome and noisy“, “What’s the point of having main vocals then?“, “It’s too ear-piercing“…

Meanwhile, despite members Yuqi and Minnie experiencing sudden health issues right before the comeback, (G)I-DLE remains determined to showcase full-group stages to their fans. The music show performances for the new song “Super Lady” will continue as planned.

You can check out their comeback stage today (Feb 2nd) on KBS 2TV’s “Music Bank”.
