Legendary actress Michelle Yeoh sparked a wave of mixed reactions at the Singapore premiere of Wicked: For Good on November 13. Attending alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo at Universal Studios Singapore, Yeoh showcased a striking and unconventional gown by Dutch designer Iris van Herpen.

The strapless brown gown featured a corset-style top that hugged Michelle Yeoh’s figure, paired with a voluminous 3D pleated skirt that many found abstract. Crafted from glass-organza, a translucent fabric with a sparkling, glass-like sheen, the gown was designed to combine elegance with avant-garde artistry.

While Western fans praised the look as “perfect,” “stunning,” and “breathtaking,” many Chinese netizens criticized it harshly. Some likened the skirt to cow stomach, comparing the layered pleats to the texture of beef tripe. Comments ranged from:

  • Help me, it looks just like cow stomach.
  • That’s literally a tripe dress.
  • It looks like a mishmash of organs.

Some also noted Michelle Yeoh’s lean physique, pointing out the exposed chest area and pronounced veins, suggesting that a more modest design might have accentuated her martial arts elegance without drawing attention to her thin frame.

Despite the fashion controversy, Michelle Yeoh earned praise for her quick action in protecting Ariana Grande from a disruptive fan. During the red carpet walk, a 25-year-old man, Johnson Wen, attempted to breach security and grab Ariana Grande. Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Erivo stepped in, with Yeoh pulling Ariana close and comforting her, preventing further incident.

In the film, Michelle Yeoh plays the villainous Madame Morrible, the influential head of the magic department at Shiz University. Morrible is depicted as cunning and manipulative, using students like Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Grande) to achieve her own goals.

The film is set to release in several countries on November 20, 2025, with the U.S. release following on November 21, 2025.
