“Marry My Husband” Praised for Outdoing the Original Webtoon by Changing This Character’s Backstory

Not only does it change small details, but K-drama "Marry My Husband" also entirely rewrites the backstory of a character

With just two more episodes to go, tvN’s hit drama “Marry My Husband” is about to wrap up. Besides the main plot revolving around four main characters, viewers are particularly intrigued by a side couple whose story rivals that of the female lead Ji Won (Park Min Young).

They are none other than the manager Yang Joo Ran and department head Lee Suk Joon, both colleagues at Ji Won’s company.

Marry My Husband Yang Joo Ran

From the start, Yang Joo Ran has been a standout character in Ji Won’s life. She’s a reserved coworker, not good at communication, but kind towards Ji Won. Ji Won is devastated to learn that Joo Ran is the one battling cancer in her place, enduring mistreatment from her husband in this life, with the possibility of facing a similar fate to Ji Won’s death at the hands of Min Hwan. However, unlike Ji Won’s past life, Joo Ran has department head Lee to protect her.

Marry My Husband Yang Joo Ran

The bond between Lee and Yang is portrayed with subtlety, devoid of any melodrama or excessive romantic scenes typical of the lead couple. They silently support each other, with Lee Suk Joon offering solace to a troubled Yang Joo Ran in her marriage. Their relationship has garnered as much love from viewers.

What’s particularly noteworthy is how the relationship between Lee and Yang surpasses that of the webtoon. In the original webtoon, the person who helped Yang during her crisis is a younger junior coworker, making their romance feel contrived.

However, in the drama adaptation, the writer swaps this character with department head Lee, an older, mature, and reliable man who can provide Joo Ran with protection. Viewers applaud this change, believing it adds a layer of realism and enhances the credibility of Joo Ran’s romantic arc.
