Actor Ma Dong-seok (Don Lee), long celebrated as Korea’s “action king,” is now facing the harshest chapter of his career. His latest drama, Twelve, has been branded as the breaking point of the so-called “Ma Dong-seok Universe.”

After years of success with The Outlaws franchise — including Season 4 surpassing 10 million viewers — the actor’s brand of bone-crushing punches and familiar action beats are showing signs of fatigue.
The cracks first appeared in films like Badland Hunters and Holy Night: Demon Hunters. Now, with Disney+ and KBS2 drama Twelve, the decline is undeniable. Ratings started strong at 8.1% thanks to Ma Dong-seok’s star power, but have since collapsed to a low of 2.6% (Nielsen Korea, nationwide), reflecting poor reception.
Part of the disappointment lies in the gap between ambition and execution. Twelve set out to create a fantasy action spectacle based on the mythology of the Eastern Zodiac. Yet rather than delivering cinematic thrills, the production reminded many viewers of a children’s stage play, with costumes that seemed better suited for a folk village performance.

Critics noted that the villains lacked menace, the fight scenes lacked power, and the pacing felt sluggish rather than exhilarating.
The greater issue, however, is that Ma Dong-seok’s once-celebrated fighting style has lost its impact. In every project, his characters seem to rely on the same solution: defeat the enemy with brute force. With no sense of vulnerability, transformation, or reinvention, audiences are left watching variations of the same performance over and over again.
The return of familiar supporting actors only added to this sense of déjà vu. Even fresh faces such as Seo In-guk and [Kang Mina] struggled to shine, overshadowed by the repetition of a well-worn formula.
Twelve was designed as the start of a new series, but its reception makes further installments doubtful. The metaphor often used by critics — that Ma Dong-seok’s creative universe has been “boiled until even the bone marrow is gone” — feels especially apt.
Once a guarantee of excitement at the box office, his brand now risks becoming synonymous with stagnation. Unless he takes bold steps to reinvent himself, the decline of the “Ma Dong-seok Universe” may become irreversible.
