Lionel Messi has spoken publicly for the first time since Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, thanking supporters, expressing pride in his teammates, and congratulating the newly crowned world champions.
In an emotional post shared on Instagram, the Argentina captain admitted the loss would take time to overcome but emphasized that he would choose to remember the team’s remarkable journey rather than the disappointment of the final.
Messi acknowledged the heartbreak of falling short in the World Cup final, writing that the defeat left a deep emotional wound. “This pain is enormous, and it will take a long time for this wound to heal.”
Despite the disappointment, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said he wanted to focus on the memories Argentina created throughout the tournament. “I’ll keep the best moments… the incredible comebacks where we gave everything, moments that will stay with us forever. Together with the support of an entire nation and the tireless effort of this group, we once again proved that Argentina belongs among the best teams in the world.”
The Inter Miami star also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Argentina’s supporters, saying the team’s greatest achievement went beyond reaching another World Cup final.
According to Messi, bringing the country together and inspiring national pride was one of the tournament’s most meaningful accomplishments. He thanked fans for every message of support and reflected on the unity the national team helped create throughout its World Cup campaign.
Messi concluded his statement by congratulating Spain on winning the World Cup. “I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship.” His message echoed Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, who also admitted after the match that Spain had been the better side and said Argentina must “know how to lose” with dignity.
Although Argentina failed to defend its 2022 World Cup title, Messi’s conduct after the match drew widespread praise. In addition to publicly congratulating Spain, the Argentine captain was seen embracing and encouraging Spanish youngster Lamine Yamal after the final whistle, a moment many supporters highlighted as another example of his sportsmanship.
