In Chinese entertainment, few lives mirror melodrama as closely as that of Lili Liu—the acclaimed director whose personal sacrifices rivaled the sweeping Chiung Yao romances she brought to the screen. Behind her Golden Bell Awards and timeless television works was a woman who spent 45 years in emotional limbo as the secret partner of married man Dong Jin Hu, navigating a love triangle filled with sorrow, selflessness, and silent loyalty.
A Romance Written in Tragedy
A stunning alumna of Taiwan’s Drama Academy in the 1970s, Lili Liu met senior colleague Dong Jin Hu on set and fell in love—only to discover he was already married to Wang Mei and had children. Initially heartbroken, Liu eventually gave in to his emotional appeals, choosing a life with no title and no recognition, hidden in the shadows.

As Dong’s career floundered in behind-the-scenes roles, Liu thrived. With her skillful direction of Chiung Yao’s adaptations like Romance in the Rain, Wicked Husband, and Between Water and Clouds, she won the Golden Bell Awards and rose to become one of Taiwan’s most respected TV directors.
A Mistress Who Gave Up Motherhood
Lili Liu never attempted to break Dong’s family apart. Wang Mei, hurt and betrayed, chose not to divorce due to societal expectations and the children. Yet Liu’s guilt led her to take drastic measures to earn the wife’s trust. In a shocking act of penance, she underwent voluntary sterilization surgery, signaling she would never compete for Dong’s legal affection or bear his children.

She also stepped in to help when Wang Mei’s child once fell seriously ill, rushing the child to the hospital and caring for them in the absence of both parents. Her actions slowly softened Wang Mei’s heart.
Eventually, the three formed an unconventional family unit: Liu supported them financially, while Wang Mei managed the home and raised the children. All of Dong’s children from his marriage were cared for by Liu, who gave her entire income to Wang Mei without hesitation.

From “Other Woman” to Legal Wife After 45 Years
Their unconventional bond lasted over four decades. But in 2009, when Lili Liu suffered a life-threatening illness and needed urgent surgery, no one could sign the consent form legally. In an unexpected gesture of compassion, Wang Mei divorced Dong Jin Hu, allowing Liu to become his legal wife at age 72—just so she could be eligible for surgery.

Though she survived, Liu became fully paralyzed. At this point, Wang Mei stepped up once again—this time as her caregiver. She fed, bathed, and stayed by Liu’s side daily. In one poignant moment, Liu clasped Wang Mei’s hand three times—each grip silently saying: “I love you.“
Immortalized in Film
Dong Jin Hu passed away in 2014, followed by Liu four years later at 80. Her funeral was attended by a wave of stars from Taiwan’s entertainment industry, honoring both her contributions to television and the emotional complexity of her personal life.

Chiung Yao later immortalized Liu’s story in her final screenplay, with actress Rainie Yang portraying Liu in a biopic. The film offered a touching and nuanced portrayal of a woman whose name stood for both artistic brilliance and silent endurance.
