LGBT People Angry At The Title “Love Wins” Of IU’s New Song

On January 16th, IU’s agency EDAM Entertainment uploaded on their official Instagram account a black and white poster showing IU and BTS’s V sitting face to face.

In the poster, IU was filming V with a camcorder, and the song title “LOVE WINS” appeared at the top in a large font.

As soon as the poster was released, LGBT people poured negative reactions over the use of the phrase “Love Wins”, which has been used as a slogan for LGBT pride parade and LGBT content. LGBT people criticized IU, pointing out that this may tarnish the existing meaning of “Love Wins”, which has been used to support the LGBT community.

“Love Wins” is a Twitter hashtag phrase that has been mentioned among LGBT people since the legalization of same-sex marriage in the US on June 26th, 2015. Later, it became a supportive phrase for LGBT people even when the gay club shooting occurred in Orlando, USA in 2016, and has been used as a representative phrase in various pride parades.

Regarding IU’s new song, LGBT people are still complaining on SNS, saying “You must know that you cannot use the chant shouted in the scenes of oppression and discrimination should not be written in this way”, “Don’t use the LGBT slogan freely as you wish”, etc.

However, some netizens tried to defend IU, saying “It’s a little bit hasty to criticize her because the song hasn’t been released yet”, “This phrase appears in the Bible”, “Why are you guys only protesting now when hundreds of songs with the same title have been released before?”, etc.

Meanwhile, IU’s new song “Love Wins” will be released at 6 p.m. on May 24th. This is her new music release after two years and one month since her last comeback in December 2021. The music video for “Love Wins”, starring IU and BTS’s V, raised high expectations as it was directed by “Concrete Utopia” director Uhm Tae-hwa.
