Lee Yumi won The Emmys’ Outstanding Guest Actress, the first among Korean actresses

Actress Lee Yumi became the first Korean actress to win an acting award at the American award ceremony Emmys.

On September 4th (local time), the American Academy of TV Arts and Sciences held the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Here, Lee Yumi won Outstanding Guest Actress in a TV series, thanks to her role as Ji Yeong – participant No. 240 in the mega hit K-drama “Squid Game”. The actress perfectly delivered her character, who had a strong tendency towards pessimism, and was praised for her deep emotional acting, particularly in the scene where she chose to sacrifice herself to save Jung Ho Yeon’s character.

The Outstanding Guest Actress Award is given in honor of an actress who has delivered an outstanding performance in a guest starring role, and to win this title in 2022, Lee Yumi had to defeat various strong contenders.

In particular, nominees for this award category include Hope Davis, Sana Rathan, and Harriet Walter of HBO’s “Succession”; Marsha Gay Harden of Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show”; and Martha Kelly of HBO’s “Euphoria”.

This is the first time a non-English-speaking drama has won an Emmy Award, making Lee Yumi the first Korean actress to win an Emmy Award.

The Emmy Awards is the most prestigious awards in the American broadcasting industry. It is divided into the “Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Award” (grand prize for technical staff) and the “Primetime Emmy Award” (for actors and directors).

“Squid Game” was nominated for a total of 13 categories. So far, the winners of the Best Theme Song, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Stunt Performance, Visual Effects, and Outstanding Guest Award were announced.

In the end, “Squid Game” succeeded in winning not only the Guest Award, but also the Visual Effects Award and the Stunt Performance Category.

On September 12th (local time), awards will be given for six categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
