During an interview on July 17 at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, renowned Hallyu star Lee Min-ho spoke candidly about his role and the lessons he’s learned throughout his 12-year reign as a global star.
In the upcoming fantasy action film Omniscient Reader: The Prophet, based on a popular web novel, Lee Min-ho plays Yoo Joong-hyuk, a powerful protagonist within a novel that suddenly becomes reality. His character becomes a beacon for Kim Dok-ja (played by Ahn Hyo-seop), the story’s sole reader and unexpected hero, in a world spiraling toward destruction.
Returning to the big screen for the first time in a decade since Gangnam 1970, Lee admitted feeling nervous. “It’s overwhelming to say I’m returning after 10 years. I feel like I’m waiting for judgment,” he said.

Despite the hiatus from film, Lee has remained highly active in drama and global content, maintaining his position as the #1 Hallyu Star for 12 consecutive years, according to overseas surveys. He attributes his lasting popularity to authenticity:
“What I pursue is to always do my best quietly. It’s a value that aligns with Yoo Joong-hyuk in the film. Titles and descriptions can change, but my job is to do my best in the present.”
On the key to his strong international fanbase, Lee added, “I think sincerity shows in my eyes. Even if the language and culture are different, I believe people empathize with that.”

When asked about the challenges of staying at the top, especially in a world where many celebrities face personal scandals, Lee gave a thoughtful response:
“I always remind myself I could be next. Personal scandals usually stem from personal desires. When those arise, I think of what’s more important—family, the weight of my projects, things bigger than myself. That helps me stay disciplined.”
He also acknowledged the difficult balance between caution and authenticity:
“These days, everything is so sensitive. If you’re always on edge, you end up not living life in your own way. Still, I try to live healthily and with as much self-control as I can.”
“Omniscient Reader: The Prophet” opens in theaters on July 23
