In an interview with SPOTV News on October 1, following the conclusion of the popular tvN weekend drama Bon Appétit, Your Majesty on September 28, Lee Joo Ahn disclosed that he had undergone a liver transplant at the age of 22 to save his mother. “I actually received an exemption,” he explained. “I donated 70% of my liver to my mother, and afterward, I was deemed unfit for service.”
Lee recalled the emergency that led to the surgery. “My mother had long struggled with liver problems, but then her condition deteriorated rapidly due to cirrhosis. I got a call saying she had lost consciousness, and I rushed to the hospital. They said urgent surgery was needed, and I agreed to the transplant.” Fortunately, his mother’s health improved after the procedure, and she is now able to happily watch her son’s growing success.

“Now, I just feel grateful and happy,” Lee said with a smile. “My mom is so proud. She tells people, ‘My son is an actor,’ and it feels like I’ve finally given her that joy. Hearing people recognize Gong Gil makes me feel reassured, even when I’m far from home.”
Lee Joo Ahn debuted in 2018 with SKY Castle and has steadily built his career through roles in Save Me 2, Sweet Munchies, True Beauty, and Love Song for Illusion. His portrayal of Gong Gil—a beloved court clown who secretly doubles as an assassin—has cemented his name as a rising talent in Korean drama.
He concluded by expressing his gratitude to fans: “Everything is thanks to the viewers who enjoyed the show. I’m truly thankful to everyone, and I’ll keep working hard to greet you with more great projects in the future.”
