On July 27, Lee Hyori appeared alongside veteran actress Kim Hye Ja in JTBC’s special documentary “Hyeja’s Garden More Beautiful Than Heaven”. During the broadcast, Hyori mentioned being deeply moved by the drama “Heavenly Ever After”, especially scenes involving dogs, saying, “I cried a lot. I’ve sent many of my own dogs to heaven.”
She then revealed a personal story, “While trying to break up a fight between dogs, one nearly severed my finger. All the nerves were cut, and I had to be hospitalized.” She showed her visibly altered left middle finger, stating that it has been two years since the surgery. “My finger was dangling, and I thought it had been completely severed,” she recalled.
Kim Hye Ja, visibly moved, said, “How can a woman’s hand end up like this?” To this, Hyori responded, “My husband was filming in Seoul at the time, and I needed his consent to proceed with the surgery. But I’m not ashamed at all, even when people comment on my hand on TV.” Kim Hye Ja supported her, saying, “I wouldn’t be ashamed either. It’s out of love for dogs. You’re the one who got hurt.”
At the time of the accident, Lee had told fans it was caused by her finger getting caught in a car door, seemingly to keep them from worrying. After learning the true story, netizens left supportive comments such as: “She must have said that so fans wouldn’t worry,” “I didn’t know it was this serious,” “Please take care of yourself,” and “That must have been so painful.”
Lee Hyori is widely known for her work in animal welfare and rescuing abandoned pets. In 2010, while volunteering at the Peace Princess Shelter in Anseong, she adopted a stray dog named Soonshim. She now lives with six rescued dogs.
In 2011, she also participated in a talent-donation project to support stray animals. She released the song “Please Remain”, written from the perspective of an abandoned dog, with all proceeds donated to the shelter.
Despite the physical pain and visible injury, Lee Hyori’s unwavering compassion for animals continues to inspire fans and fellow celebrities alike.
