Despite a sudden change in its lead actor, the drama Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is receiving even greater acclaim for its casting and character dynamics.
Originally, actor Park Sung-hoon had been cast as the male lead, Yi Heon. However, after he became embroiled in controversy in early January for posting and then deleting adult content on his personal social media, the production company and broadcaster decided to withdraw his role to protect the project’s image. Rising actor Lee Chae-min was then cast just ten days before filming began. In hindsight, this casting change has proven to be a blessing in disguise.
The drama, adapted from the web novel Surviving as Yeonsan-gun’s Chef, follows the story of Yi Heon, a tyrant haunted by the unjust death of his mother and consumed by dreams of revenge. His complex emotions are revealed most vividly in scenes with the heroine, a French cuisine chef, whose cooking stirs his most vulnerable side. The portrayal of a tyrant breaking down in tears at the taste of food that reminds him of his mother, or showing childlike tendencies while eating, is considered more convincing with a younger lead like Lee Chae-min.
Adding to the drama’s appeal is Lee’s striking physical presence. Standing at 190cm, with sharp features and a commanding physique, he fits seamlessly into the period drama aesthetic. His stature also perfectly aligns with the “doorframe male lead” archetype celebrated in romance dramas. Combined with his synergy alongside female leads YoonA and Kang Han-na, the cast dynamics have been praised as both visually captivating and well-balanced.
The casting shift has also strengthened character relationships. The age-gap tension between Yi Heon and Kang Han-na’s character, concubine Kang Mok-ju (a variation of the historical figure Chang Noksu), resonates with historical accuracy. Meanwhile, his chemistry with YoonA, the chef heroine, feels more grounded. Although some viewers found the casting of Yi Heon’s childhood friend, Im Song-jae, slightly mismatched in age, many agreed that framing it as part of his “old-faced” characterization makes it acceptable.
Fans of the original web novel are especially anticipating the second half of the drama, where Yi Heon fully transforms into a tyrant. The delicate, bittersweet relationship between the chef heroine and the increasingly ruthless monarch—who, despite his cruelty, relies on her for his only moments of human comfort—is expected to become the central emotional core. While maintaining its romantic comedy elements, the drama is set to weave in political intrigue and power struggles, creating a stark contrast between tender romance and harsh brutality.
Viewer reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as “a genius casting decision,” “many scenes wouldn’t have worked with the original actor,” and “a younger male lead is a perfect fit for a rom-com.” What began as a crisis has ultimately elevated the drama’s execution and boosted its buzz factor, proving the unexpected casting change to be a masterstroke.
