LE SSERAFIM Eunchae Nicki Minaj TikTok controversy

In the short video posted to LE SSERAFIM’s official TikTok account, Eunchae and fellow member Yunjin joined a viral trend that blends two popular tracks — “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes and “Beez in the Trap” by Nicki Minaj. The format, which has already been recreated by countless users including BLACKPINK’s Jennie and Lisa, involves one person lip-syncing to the rock anthem before the focus switches to another as Nicki’s rap begins.

However, when Eunchae’s turn came, the 17-year-old idol placed her hand over her mouth and stayed silent instead of miming Nicki Minaj’s lyrics — a small gesture that quickly ignited major controversy.

The clip, which amassed hundreds of thousands of views within hours, drew sharp criticism from some viewers who argued that Eunchae’s gesture was “disrespectful” and “unprepared.”

“If she didn’t know the lyrics, she shouldn’t have done that part,” one comment read.
“It comes off like she’s mocking the song,” another added.

Critics suggested that the group should have assigned the rap section to another member who could confidently deliver the lines.

At the same time, many fans rushed to defend Eunchae, pointing out that English isn’t her native language and that the song — released in 2012 — came out when she was only five years old. They also argued that her gesture was simply an innocent attempt to match the rhythm creatively, not a sign of disrespect.

“She’s just a kid having fun with a trend,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“People are overreacting — she didn’t mean any harm.”

This latest controversy highlights the delicate relationship between K-pop idols and Western fandoms, particularly when it comes to cross-cultural references. Nicki Minaj’s fans, known as the Barbz, have a long history of defending the rapper online, and even small perceived slights can lead to viral debates.

While neither LE SSERAFIM nor HYBE has made an official statement, discussions about cultural sensitivity, generational gaps, and the pressures of viral trends continue to spread across platforms like TikTok, X, and Reddit.

This isn’t the first time LE SSERAFIM has faced backlash over their social media activity. The group — known for their bold image and edgy performances — often walks a fine line between confidence and controversy. Despite the criticism, Eunchae remains one of the most popular fourth-generation idols, admired for her cheerful personality and natural humor.

For now, fans hope the young star won’t be discouraged by the backlash, while others urge HYBE to be more cautious about trend participation that could unintentionally spark international disputes.
