Despite its explosive global popularity, Netflix’s animated film KPop Demon Hunters has been deemed ineligible for a nomination by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), raising questions about how this decision might ripple through to the Oscars.
On November 12 (KST), Variety reported that BAFTA’s film committee concluded KPop Demon Hunters did not meet eligibility standards for the 79th British Academy Film Awards scheduled for February next year. While the film remains a strong contender for the U.S. Academy Awards, this exclusion marks a stark contrast in its awards trajectory.

BAFTA typically requires a theatrical release to qualify, although it sometimes makes exceptions for films shown through special event screenings. Netflix appealed the decision, citing that KPop Demon Hunters had special screenings across 264 UK theaters on August 23-24 and an additional release in 528 theaters during the Halloween season (October 31–November 2).
However, BAFTA dismissed the appeal, stating that the film failed to meet the minimum requirement: at least 10 commercial screenings over a seven-day run in the UK.
Netflix now shifts its focus to another animated feature, In Your Dreams, directed by Chinese-American filmmaker Alex Woo, which is set to premiere on November 24 and is expected to be a strong BAFTA contender.

The disqualification sparked concern among industry insiders that it could impact the film’s Oscar prospects. As noted by Deadline, “Since the creation of the Best Animated Feature category, no film has ever won the Oscar without being nominated for a BAFTA.” The publication speculated that KPop Demon Hunters’ exclusion could open doors for other contenders like Zootopia 2.

Still, many in the industry believe KPop Demon Hunters remains one of the strongest Oscar contenders this season. The film’s influence extends far beyond the screen. The fictional girl group Huntr/x’s theme song Golden is nominated in five Grammy categories, while additional tracks like Your Idol and Soda Pop continue to chart on the Billboard Hot 100—testament to the film’s far-reaching cultural impact.
With global audiences closely watching, the big question remains: can KPop Demon Hunters overcome the BAFTA snub and secure Oscar gold?
