Korean University Professor Praised “Gyeongseong Creature’ For Educating Japanese On Their Past War Crimes

On December 5th, Professor Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University wrote on his Facebook page, “The Netflix series ‘Gyeongseong Creature’ is resonating with many Internet users in Japan.”

“Since “Gyeongseong Creature” Part 1 was released, it has been steadily staying at the top of Japanese Netflix and has been receiving a lot of attention from Internet users,” he explained.

Professor Seo added, “In particular, there were quite a lot of Japanese netizens recognize the historical facts of ‘Unit 731’ with comments such as ‘I didn’t know Unit 731 was real’, ‘I learned about Unit 731 for the first time’, and ‘It was an opportunity to know about Unit 731’.”

He said, “It is very meaningful that historical facts about crimes such as Unit 731 and experiments on humans, which were rarely covered in Japanese education, were well given to Japanese netizens thanks to Netflix’s “Gyeongseong Creature.”

As a similar example, Apple TV+ drama “Pachinko” depicts Korean suffering during Japanese colonial era and delivered it to viewers around the world.

Professor Seo said, “It can be seen that the power of ‘K content’ has contributed greatly to the correct Japan’s history through global OTT dramas and movies,” adding, “I hope that K content will spread around the world this year and that the history of Northeast Asia will be properly known to the world.”

Meanwhile, Netflix’s “Gyeongseong Creature” Part 2 will be released on Friday, January 5, 2024, and the release time will be 5 p.m (KST).
