Korean Netizens Divided on Recent News of Celebrity Couples Parting Ways

Korean netizens have weighed in on celebrities’ split

Lately, Korea’s showbiz scene has been buzzing with a string of celebrities’ breakups. Over the past few months, several fan-favorite couples have parted ways, with the recent shocker being “Reply 1988” couple Hyeri and Ryu Jun Yeol’s separation.

Prior to Hyeri and Ryu Jun Yeol, BLACKPINK’s Jisoo and actor Ahn Bo Hyun also ended their two-month romance in late October. Recently, several other stars have also announced their divorces.

While these stories involving celebrities’ personal lives draw public attention, there’s also criticism of media coverage. Under a hot topic on the online community Theqoo, Korean netizens have revealed divided opinions on whether or not news on celebrities’ love life, such as dating confirmation and breakup, spark their interest.

Some argued that celebrities’ privacy, including their love life, should be respected. Others admitted that discussions about public figures’ personal lives are inevitably attention-grabbing.

Opinions ranged from indifference to curiosity, with some saying that only news of celebrity weddings is worth making headlines.

Korean netizens left comments such as:

  • “I only care if they tie the knot.”
  • “I’m not that interested but many people can be really invested in a celebrity couple’s relationship. Especially those who come from popular dramas.”
  • “Whether exposed naturally or not, the demand for celebrities’ private lives always seems to be high. It’s a natural thing everywhere.”
  • “Write articles about their weddings only.”
