On October 24th, during the final trial held at the Seoul Central District Court, Judge Ha Jin-woo presiding, the prosecution requested a one-year prison sentence for the defendant, identified as Ms. Lee.
In addition, the prosecution also sought sentences of one year and one year and six months, respectively, for two individuals, including the head of an adult content production company, who were also charged.
In her final statement, Ms. Lee expressed remorse “I deeply apologize for causing public controversy with my actions. I promise not to stand in court again for a similar matter“, pleading for leniency.
Her defense attorney argued, “Taking into account the extent of her body exposure, her motives and other factors, please carefully consider whether her actions were truly obscene, so that she is not unjustly treated.”
During her testimony, Ms. Lee claimed that only her arms and legs were exposed at the time, and that she merely invited passersby to put their hands into the box out of curiosity, not to touch her chest directly.
It was reported that six people actually put their hands in, each for about one minute, and the act was not done for monetary gain or business promotion purposes.
Ms. Lee also claimed that if she had gained popularity and made a profit from the act, she had intended to donate the proceeds.
However, she admitted to having planned a fan meeting with a ticket price of 650,000 KRW per person, though she clarified that the proceeds from this event were not intended for donation.
When the court pointed out that she had previously stated in a video on SNS that she would make more holes in the box if she gained over 100,000 followers, Ms. Lee explained, “I had no intention of actually doing that. It was just to attract attention.”
The court will announce the final verdict on December 12th.
Ms. Lee, along with others, was put on trial for public indecency after allowing people to touch her chest inside the box on the streets of Apgujeong and Hongdae in Seoul in October last year.
The footage was shared on SNS, earning her the nickname “Apgujeong Box Girl”.
Ms. Lee is also facing trial on charges related to the purchase of ketamine (in violation of the Narcotics Control Act) in a separate case at the same court.
