On November 16, the YouTube channel “Fairy Jaehyung” uploaded a video titled, “Yoojung, whom we’ve practically raised (?) since she was four her broadcast stories and what lies behind them.” During their conversation, host Jung Jaehyung brought up the difficult roles that appear throughout Kim Yoo Jung’s filmography, including her work in Thread of Lies. “That must have been so hard,” he remarked.

Released in 2014, Thread of Lies marked Kim Yoo Jung’s first attempt at playing an antagonist. She portrayed Hwa Yeon, a character who appears to be the closest friend of Cheon Ji (played by Kim Hyang Gi) but is secretly the one isolating and bullying her.
Looking back, Kim Yoo Jung explained, “I was going through puberty at the time.” When asked if the role felt painful, she replied, “I actually felt so sorry for the character.” She went on to say that although Hwa Yeon’s actions were undeniably wrong, the character was designed to reflect a child shaped by an unhealthy environment someone who never learned how to express herself properly. “As the one playing her, I had to understand her,” she said.

There were moments when Kim Yoo Jung questioned herself: “While acting, I often wondered, ‘Is it okay for me to empathize with this character?’ But because I needed to portray her with attachment, I tried to understand her as much as possible.”
She also opened up about the emotional isolation she felt during filming. “I genuinely felt lonely while shooting,” she admitted. “Hwa Yeon isn’t someone who can truly connect with others. She makes friends by pretending, so she always feels disconnected.”

Although the filming environment was cheerful, the nature of her role changed how she interacted with her co‑star and longtime friend Kim Hyang Gi. “Hyang Gi and I have worked together since we were young, but because of the roles, we couldn’t stay close on set,” Yoo Jung shared. “I was the one bullying her in the film, and her character meets an unfortunate end so keeping distance came naturally.”
Her reflections reveal just how deeply she immersed herself in the emotional complexity of the character, highlighting the challenges young actors face when taking on darker, heavier roles.
