In June 2016, late actress Kim Sae Ron, who was only 17 at the time, allegedly received a series of affectionate text messages from an anonymous man:

“Give me a kiss later,”
“Is this forbidden too?”
“When can I fall asleep holding you? That would be the best sleep ever.”

Her bereaved family claimed that the man who sent these texts was actor Kim Soo Hyun, insisting that the two had developed a romantic relationship in 2015 when she was still in middle school. However, multiple pieces of evidence now suggest that this claim is highly unlikely.

Allegations and Press Conference

Attorney Bu Ji Seok and Kim Se Ui, head of Garo Sero Research Institute, held a press conference on March 27 in Seoul, publicly releasing portions of the text messages. They alleged that the man in question was Kim Soo Hyun, questioning the nature of his relationship with Kim Sae Ron:

“If this wasn’t a romantic relationship, what kind of relationship was it? Kim Sae Ron was only 17.”

They emphasized that the texts were “not fabricated” and that the contents had been “partially redacted for privacy.”

Evidence Suggests Otherwise

However, newly obtained records show that Kim Soo Hyun could not have been the man behind the messages. According to his June 2016 filming schedule, the actor was fully occupied with the final stages of his movie Real.

He was on set for 18 days that month (June 2, 6–9, 11, 13–15, 19–22, 25–26, 28–30) including June 22, 25, and 26, the same dates the messages were allegedly exchanged.

Filming took place from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Incheon Yeongjongdo set, a two-hour drive from Kim’s residence in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. With morning calls at 8 a.m., he would have had to leave home before 6 a.m. and return around midnight leaving no realistic time for personal meetings or lengthy text conversations.

An insider confirmed, Kim Soo Hyun barely slept during filming. He was drenched in water every day shooting action scenes, and the moment he got home, he would just collapse into bed.”

Kim Soo Hyun’s lawyer, Go Sang Rok of Law Firm Pil, strongly refuted the allegations: “There is nothing in the messages that identifies the sender as Kim Soo Hyun. The released conversation conspicuously avoids mentioning any details about the man’s schedule or actions, which appears to be an intentional omission by the accusers.”

Go added that the family and their representatives know the true sender of the 2016 texts: “The previous legal team requested a police search to identify the real sender. If investigators seize the chat logs, phone, and cloud data from the family and Garo Sero Research Institute, it will be clear that they knowingly spread false information.”

Further credibility issues arose when another set of 2018 messages released by the family was found to be manipulated. They had claimed Kim Soo Hyun texted the late actress during that year yet military records and diary entries confirm he was in intense field training from April 2 to 5, 2018.

Despite multiple requests for comment, Garo Sero Research Institute’s Kim Se Ui did not respond to inquiries.
