On November 26, Kim Sae Ron’s family delivered an official statement through their legal representative, Attorney Bu Ji Seok of Law Firm Buyou, and disclosed select materials which they argue prove the two were romantically involved before Kim Sae Ron reached adulthood.
Her mother opened the statement with: “I am Sae Ron’s mother. After much deliberation, I gathered the courage to speak. Our case is currently under investigation. Authorities advised all parties to refrain from engaging with the media, and we agreed.”
However, she continued, “Despite this, Attorney Go Sang Rok claiming to represent Kim Soo Hyun has been posting repeatedly on his YouTube channel ‘Korean Legal Titan,’ spreading false claims and manipulating public opinion. We have made no media responses at all, yet the other side continues addressing the media through YouTube. I worry that people may accept their false claims as truth and that the real story may be buried.”
She added that the family had therefore decided to release part of their evidence: “To show that Kim Sae Ron dated Kim Soo Hyun as a minor, we are disclosing some of the materials we possess. After this press release, we hope both sides will cease media engagement and wait for the investigation results.”
According to the family, the evidence is divided into six categories:
- Witness testimonies from acquaintances stating the two dated when Sae Ron was underage
- A memo Kim Sae Ron wrote on September 28, 2017, before Kim Soo Hyun’s military enlistment
- KakaoTalk messages dated February 22, 2018
- Additional KakaoTalk messages from April 2018
- Photos allegedly taken at Kim Soo Hyun’s home in June 2018
- An unsent handwritten letter from Kim Sae Ron and messages exchanged with a friend
One acquaintance reportedly testified that Kim Soo Hyun personally drove them to the airport when Sae Ron traveled to Jeju while still underage. The family added that her cats’ names were changed from “Patteok” and “Kkuldeok” to “Moon” and “Cloud” because Kim Soo Hyun starred in Moon Embracing the Sun a detail they argue shows his influence at the time.
The memo extracted through forensic analysis included intimate lines such as: “We’re not easy… there are many things to overcome… what’s visible right now is age.”
and “If you really meant it when you said you wanted to meet me again, I can wait for you. Actually, it’s not even waiting I can just keep liking you.”
The family claims this memo proves the two were already dating before September 28, 2017.
They also revealed messages allegedly exchanged during Kim Soo Hyun’s military break, including heart symbols and expressions like “I miss you, you’re pretty.” Another screenshot shows Kim Sae Ron sending him a photo with the caption “I wanted to show you this.”
In addition, they disclosed an unsent letter written by Sae Ron, containing lines such as: “We’ve been together for about 5–6 years. You were my first love and my last love.” The family argues this indicates a relationship that began during her minor years.
Meanwhile, Kim Soo Hyun’s side has firmly denied ever dating Sae Ron while she was underage. During a press conference, he stated, “It is not true that we dated during her minor years,” and further claimed that the 2016 and 2018 KakaoTalk conversations were not his.
His team maintains that their relationship began in the summer of 2019, when Sae Ron was legally an adult. They also acknowledged reports that Kim Soo Hyun dated another former idol-turned-actress between 2016 and 2019.
Currently, Kim Soo Hyun has filed defamation and damages lawsuits against both the family and several YouTubers. In response, Kim Sae Ron’s family has countersued him for violating the Child Welfare Act and for false accusations. Attorney Go Sang Rok continues to publicly defend Kim Soo Hyun and challenge the family’s claims, escalating the legal standoff.
