Former First Lady Kim Keon-hee, the first in South Korea’s history to face trial while detained, has spoken out following her indictment by the special prosecutors. On August 29, Kim issued a statement through her attorney, saying, “Just as the moonlight shines brightest in the darkest night, I too will endure this time while reflecting on my truth and my heart. I will not turn away from the path before me and will face the trial with perseverance.”
Expressing remorse, Kim added, “I deeply regret having caused concern to the people, and each day has been agonizing. However, I will not make excuses under any circumstances. Even though I cannot change anything now, and new articles pour out daily as if they are confirmed facts, I will not avoid them and will instead reflect carefully.”

She also expressed gratitude: “I thank the special prosecutors for their efforts in the investigation, the correctional officers who looked after me during questioning, and my lawyers who have worked tirelessly. I sincerely ask for their continued guidance until the special investigation concludes.”
The special investigation team led by Prosecutor Min Joong-ki announced that Kim was indicted on charges of violating the Capital Market Act and Political Funds Act, and for bribery under the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes Act. With former President Yoon Suk-yeol already standing trial for charges including insurrection leadership, the unprecedented situation of both a former president and former first lady facing the court simultaneously has become a defining moment in Korean constitutional history.

Since her detention on August 12, Kim has been summoned five times for questioning but frequently declined to answer, citing health concerns and repeatedly exercising her right to remain silent. While her detention period was extended, the special prosecutors ultimately decided to proceed with the indictment without exhausting the full custody term, citing sufficient grounds for prosecution.
Investigators indicated they would continue to pursue unresolved allegations, including suspicions of stock manipulation involving Sambu Construction, questionable sponsorship deals linked to Covana Contents, preferential treatment in the Yangpyeong Expressway project, and irregularities in the Gongheung District development approval.
Kim’s indictment shifts her status from suspect to defendant, meaning she will now undergo criminal trial proceedings while remaining in custody at the Seoul Southern Detention Center, facing simultaneous court hearings and ongoing investigations.
