Singer Kim Jaejoong’s father has shared, for the first time, the painful story of his family’s past. Known for openly expressing his deep love for his parents on various programs, Kim Jaejoong was moved to tears after hearing about hardships he never knew they endured.
On the September 19 broadcast of KBS2’s Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant, Kim Jaejoong will appear with his mother to prepare a special dish filled with family memories. During filming, his parents revealed shocking details about their past that they had never shared before.

While checking on his mother’s health—already weakened after multiple surgeries—Kim heard his father confess, “When we got married, I promised she would never have to lift a finger, but I failed her. I feel like a sinner.” His mother then revealed that Jaejoong’s father, once a wealthy man from a privileged background, had lost everything after a failed investment. The family suddenly fell into massive debt, amounting to around 100 million KRW at the time.
His father recalled the devastating aftermath: “I was so shocked I couldn’t even recognize people around me. Everyone said I had gone crazy.” Jaejoong’s mother added, “He endured so many hardships, even near-death experiences. After that incident, he fell into a spiritual illness. He tried to resist shamanic possession, but he began acting strangely, almost like he had lost his mind.”

With his father’s health deteriorating, the burden of debt and raising nine children fell entirely on Jaejoong’s mother. She recalled doing everything from street vending to restaurant work to pay off their debts. Fighting back tears, she said, “Even when I felt like dying, I couldn’t. The children would say, ‘Mom, we’re hungry,’ and I had no choice but to keep going.”
Hearing his mother’s words for the first time, Kim Jaejoong was visibly shaken, breaking down in tears alongside her. The long-hidden story of his family’s resilience will be revealed in full during the broadcast of Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant at 8:30 PM KST.
