kim hyung eun death anniversary

Nineteen years after her passing, the late comedian Kim Hyung Eun continues to be remembered with deep sorrow and enduring love.

Kim Hyung Eun passed away at the young age of 25, leaving behind grieving family members and fellow comedians. Although time has passed, the pain of her loss remains vivid for those who knew her.

In 2006, Kim Hyung Eun was involved in a sudden traffic accident while traveling by car for a performance with fellow comedians Jang Kyung Hee and Shim Jin Hwa. She suffered a cervical spine fracture and underwent treatment for approximately one month. Though her condition appeared to be improving, she tragically passed away in January 2007 after suffering cardiac arrest caused by internal bleeding.

What made her passing even more heartbreaking was her reported statement during recovery. “I want to live,” she reportedly said at the hospital, a sentence that continues to move many to tears even years later.

Although nearly two decades have passed since her death, Kim Hyung Eun has not been forgotten. Comedians including Shim Jin Hwa continue to visit her memorial site every year, honoring her memory with letters and flowers.

Shim Jin Hwa once shared her emotional thoughts after visiting the columbarium, saying that seeing the growing stack of letters made the passage of time feel more real. As she grows older, the fact that her friend passed away at such a young age feels even more painful and unfair.

Shim Jin Hwa also revealed that she and fellow comedians permanently paid the maintenance fees for Kim Hyung Eun’s memorial niche, a gesture that deeply touched the public.

Reflecting on the years gone by, Shim Jin Hwa shared, “It’s been 20 years. I have more photos with Hyung Eun’s parents than with Hyung Eun herself.” Fellow comedian Kim Jae Woo also posted a group photo taken with Kim Hyung Eun at the center, writing that they were once rookies who have now grown into adults—parents, spouses, and people carrying someone precious in their hearts.

The warmth extended beyond remembrance. Shim Jin Hwa also took care of Kim Hyung Eun’s father, attending his 90th birthday celebration. The event was hosted by comedian Kim Won Hyo and attended by close colleagues including Kim Shin Young, Kim Ki Wook, and Lee Jong Gyu.

On Parents’ Day, Shim Jin Hwa personally visited Kim Hyung Eun’s father, delivering carnations and a handwritten note that read, “Father, thank you on Parents’ Day. Please stay healthy. — From Won Hyo and Jin Hwa.”

Shim Jin Hwa has continued to honor her late friend not only on the anniversary of her passing but also on her birthday every year. Last year, she shared a post celebrating Kim Hyung Eun’s birthday, explaining she visited a day early due to filming and offered bright sunflowers in tribute.

Kim Hyung Eun debuted in 2003 as part of SBS’s 7th open recruitment class of comedians. She gained popularity through the program People Looking for a Laugh, where she performed as part of the beloved trio Charlie’s Angels alongside Shim Jin Hwa and Jang Kyung Hee.

Though her life was tragically short, Kim Hyung Eun’s presence continues to live on through the unwavering remembrance of her friends—proof that some bonds remain unbroken, even by time.
