Rumor that Kim Hye Ja collaborated with GS25 to release new lunchboxes for underfed children is spreading rapidly, but the truth is?

The recent rumor about GS25 and Kim Hye Ja’s collaborative lunch box products has been proven to be wrong.

After 6 years, GS25 released “Hyeja homemade food series” again and is recording remarkable sales. According to GS25 officials, “Hyeja homemade stir-fried spicy pork lunchbox” sold 550,000 units within 12 days of its release.

Amid the popularity of ‘Hyeja lunchbox’, a netizen on Ruliweb spread a rumor about Kim Hye Ja on February 27th. They said, “6 years ago, Kim Hye Ja’s lunch box contract expired and the actress also refused to renew the contract. The reason she signed a new contract to release new collaborative lunch boxes after 6 years is because of poorly-fed children. Prices are increasing rapidly in this era, so Kim Hye Ja decided to make lunch boxes by strictly participating in the selection of food and tasting so that poorly-fed children can easily buy them and eat with their ‘meal cards’”, adding “You can see the daily discount period is unusually long. It is to match the time student go to school to ease their burden of meals for children who don’t eat before school starts”.

However, this story is not true. In a telephone conversation with Wikitree, an official from GS Retail confirmed, “It is true that Kim Hye Ja decided to collaborate after positively reviewing the ‘meal card’ strategy that GS Retail has been implementing recently. However, the rumored story is only one of the numerous reasons for our collaboration”, adding “We have never issued any separate notice on this collaboration”.

Meanwhile, Kim Hye Ja’s lunch boxes were released in 2010 and sold until 2017. The products were greatly loved by Korean people because they are cheap but have good quality food.

Since last year, GS Retail has introduced an online ‘meal card’ payment system to provide conditions for poorly-fed children to enjoy nutritious meals at cheaper prices without worrying about public eyes.
