Kim Hee-sun, “I cut and bleached my hair for the first time in 20 years to improve the synchronization with my character in the original version”
Actress Kim Hee-sun raised expectations for MBC’s “Tomorrow”, which is set to air in the first half of this year.
MBC’s new Friday-Saturday drama “Tomorrow” (directed by Kim Tae-yoon, Sung Chi-wook, written by Park Ran, Park Ja-kyung, Kim Yoo-jin, produced by Supermoon Pictures, Studio N) is a human fantasy that tells about the group of grim reapers who used to led people to death now save people who want to suicide. Kim Hee-sun appears in this work as grim reaper Goo-ryeon.
In an interview on February 23rd, when asked why she chose “Tomorrow”, Kim Hee-sun said, “I wanted to do a drama that can give comfort to everyone. Rather than delivering a great message, I hope the drama’s existence alone, like saying ‘I’m right next to you’, can give you strength for tomorrow and even every day”.
Regarding her character Goo-ryeon, Kim Hee-sun said, “Ryeon is a tsundere (who is cold on the outside but warm on the inside)”, adding, “She uses strong voice tone and speaks straightforwardly so that people who give up on their lives can stand up again on their own and gain enlightenment. But there are love and affection in what she says and does. Ryeon is really cool, she knows how to take care of others”.
Especially Kim Hee-sun also mentioned the synchronization with her character, saying, “50%”, adding, “What we have in common is that we like taking care of other people. But unlike me, who enjoys hanging out with people, Ryeon doesn’t keep anyone close to her”.
Kim Hee-sun drew attention by attempting a shocking transformation in her image with a pink bobbed hairstyle to play her character Goo-ryeon. The actress said, “After reading the original work, I tried to match my appearance with my character’s as much as possible. I thought it was the best way to understand the work and my character even more”, adding, “For the first time in 20 years, I cut my hair short and bleached it all. To keep the pink color, I use coating shampoo once every 2-3 days”.
In addition, Kim Hee-sun also shared, “I got a lot of visual imaginations and ideas from the original work. I think it will be really interesting to use costumes I purchased or have that refers to the costumes and props in the webtoon”, making the viewers look forward to how Kim Hee-sun will become Goo-ryeon.
Kim Hee-sun worked with Rowoon, Lee Soo-hyuk and Yoon Ji-on in “Tomorrow“. Kim Hee-sun said, “I met them for the first time through this work, and we got really close. Rowoon is a really kind, hard-working and sincere friend. Yoon Ji-on is also cute and friendly. Thanks for following me well.”
She added, “Lee Soo-hyuk is so cool that can make you automatically say ‘this is why he’s a top model’. Especially, every time he utters a line with his cave voice, my eyes are drawn to him.”
In addition, when asked about the most anticipated scene, Kim Hee-sun shared, “In the first episode, there is a scene where Ryeon throws cider at the perpetrator on behalf of the victim. I think all of Ryeon’s actions and lines will represent viewers’ hearts. There are many heart-warming episodes, so I hope you can check them out through the original broadcast.”
“Tomorrow” is based on the Naver webtoon of the same name by writer Llama. Kim Hee-sun recalled her first meeting with Llama, “I enjoyed reading the webtoon and really wanted to meet the writer. It was great to see her in person. I’ll do my best to capture the character Goo-ryeon that Llama drew. Thank you for creating a wonderful character.”
Finally, Kim Hee-sun told viewers, “Goo-ryeon is a grim reaper that saves people. It’s completely different from the grim reaper you’ve seen before. I hope that you’ll support and see how Goo-ryeon saves people together with the crisis management team’s members Joon-woong and Rung-gu.”
“Tomorrow” will premiere in March following “Tracer“.
