On May 20, several Korean online communities began re-sharing a famous post titled: “Kang Dong Won college classmate exposure.”
The post included old university photos of the actor alongside a humorous comment from someone claiming to be his former schoolmate.
According to the viral comment, Kang Dong Won worked at the Mechanical Engineering Department’s food-and-drinks booth during a university festival while attending Hanyang University ERICA Campus.
The anonymous poster jokingly wrote:
“During the school festival, Kang Dong Won was making side dishes and serving customers at the mechanical engineering booth. Because of that, every other department’s booth failed. He’s a very bad person.”
The playful “accusation” immediately made Korean netizens burst into laughter, with many saying the story was completely believable considering Kang Dong Won’s legendary visuals even during his university years.
The actor entered Hanyang University’s Mechanical Engineering Department in 1999, and stories about his overwhelming popularity on campus have circulated online for years.
The resurfaced anecdote gained even more attention because Kang Dong Won himself had previously addressed the viral story during an appearance on YouTube.
Laughing at the rumors, the actor clarified:
“I saw that post online too. It wasn’t only our department booth that did well.”
He continued by explaining that he mostly handled serving food and carrying drinks because freshmen were typically responsible for those tasks during festivals.
Kang Dong Won added:
“I don’t remember everything clearly, but I worked hard. After it ended, I drank with the seniors.”
When asked whether he truly caused damage to other booths because of his appearance, the actor jokingly responded:
“Was I really causing trouble? I don’t think so.”
Online reactions exploded once again after the story resurfaced, with many netizens leaving hilarious comments such as:
“I admit it. That’s truly evil.”
“If Kang Dong Won personally served customers, every other booth was doomed.”
“That’s basically a tactical nuclear weapon at a university festival.”
Meanwhile, Kang Dong Won is currently preparing for the release of the upcoming comedy film Wild Thing.
The movie tells the story of a once-famous co-ed dance group called Triangle, which reunites 20 years after suddenly disbanding due to an unexpected incident. Kang Dong Won stars alongside Uhm Tae Goo and Park Ji Hyun, playing the role of Hyun Woo — the leader and “dance machine” of the legendary trio.
Even before the film’s release, Kang Dong Won’s retro visuals and resurfaced university stories are once again reminding fans why he has long been considered one of Korea’s most iconic visuals.
