K-Pop Demon Hunters is an action-fantasy animation that follows K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who live double lives as secret defenders of the world behind their glamorous stages. With a unique narrative featuring top girl group Huntrix and their rivals, the boy group Saja Boys, the film delivers fresh storytelling.

Contender for Oscars

Recently, Variety, one of the most prominent film industry publications in the U.S., named “K-Pop Demon Hunters” as a strong contender deserving a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 2025 Oscars.

In its review, Variety described K-Pop Demon Hunters as “High-Concept Toon Is as Catchy as the Korean Music Phenom That Inspired It.” The outlet praised the film as a Netflix Original that the animation category should rightfully acknowledge, highlighting both its artistic value and cultural significance.

Since its release, the film has topped Netflix’s Top 10 in over 40 countries, and entered the Top 10 list in more than 90. It garnered a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its visual style, character development, and action choreography, calling it a “bold reimagining of the animation genre” and “a cultural milestone.”

Musical Achievements

According to the OTT streaming analytics site FlixPatrol on June 30, the film has maintained its #1 spot globally on Netflix’s movie chart with a score of 841 points as of its 10th day since release.
After debuting at #1 in 22 countries on its first day (June 21), the film quickly gained word-of-mouth popularity, especially among Korean viewers—its key target audience. By the fourth day, it topped the charts in 41 countries and entered the Top 10 in nearly 90 countries.

On June 29, thanks to the weekend bump, it hit #1 in 33 nations. In Korea, it regained the top spot on June 28 and held it through the 29th, while consistently ranking #2 in the U.S.

Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, known for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and co-directed by Korean-Canadian Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film blends occult action with K-pop idol culture, confirming the global appeal and evolution of K-content.

Given that K-pop is the central theme, the music plays a pivotal role. From its historically accurate depiction of different eras and cultures to compelling characters and emotional depth, the film’s soundtrack has been praised for its perfection.

On June 29, Billboard reported that the K-Pop Demon Hunters original soundtrack debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 with 31,000 album units—this year’s highest debut for a soundtrack and its first Top 10 entry. This included 27,000 units from streaming (SEA), 3,000 from album sales, and 1,000 from track-equivalent albums (TEA).

Spotify has also been flooded with charting songs. Huntrix’s “Golden” and Saja Boys’ “Your Idol” have emerged as fan favorites, with additional tracks like “Soda Pop” and “How It’s Done” also performing strongly.

Back home, Korean viewers are particularly enthusiastic. Many are calling “Soda Pop” the best debut track since TVXQ’s “Hug” and praising its success on domestic charts like Melon. The producer Teddy, involved in the music, is also receiving widespread praise.

As fans declare “Your Idol” their new favorite anthem, it’s clear that K-Pop Demon Hunters deserves a sequel. For Netflix, this isn’t just a hopeful wish, but an urgent, realistic next step.
