K-pop album sales in May reached a record high of total 10 million copies sold on the Gaon Chart.
According to Kim Jin-woo, a senior researcher at Gaon Chart on Jun 15th, Gaon Chart’s “Physical Sales 400” (total sales of 1st to 400th places) reached 9,331,279 copies last month, up 81.4% from the same period last year.
Compared to the previous month, it increased by 115.9%. An official from Gaon Chart said, “It is the highest monthly sales volume ever.”
Looking at last month’s album sales by singer (based on a single album), Seventeen’s 4th full album “Face the Sun” topped the list with 2,239,351 copies sold.
The 4th mini-album “Minisode 2: Thursday’s Child” by TXT came in second with 1,632,824 copies, and singer Lim Young-woong’s 1st full album “IM HERO” came in third with 1,138,876 copies.
LE SSERAFIM‘s 1st mini-album “FEARLESS” is the only girl group album to be listed in the top 10 with 412,696 copies, while Kang Daniel’s 1st full album “The Story” was ranked 9th with 169,105 copies and 10th with the “Meta Version” of the same album (CD-free album, 150,000 copies).
Kim Jin-woo, the senior researcher at Gaon Chart, said, “SEVENTEEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, and Lim Young-woong’s sales accounted for 55% of the total album sales,” adding, “In January-May, the real cumulative sales of albums were about 27 million, up about 8 million copies from the same period last year.”
Meanwhile, last month’s “music usage 400” (total music usage of 1st to 400th place) increased 3.9% from the previous month, continuing its upward trend for 3 consecutive months. This seems to be due to the release of a series of new releases by popular singers such as Psy and Lim Young-woong last month.
