Netizens once again raised doubts over SM artists’ Daesangs
On December 2nd, NCT DREAM was announced as the winner of Record Of The Year (Daesang) at Melon Music Awards 2023 (MMA 2023) voted 100% by judges. However, many netizens questioned whether the group performed impressive enough to receive the last aways and made the ending speech.
Amid the controversy, netizens looked back on the past controversies over SM artists’ Daesang wins.
1. 2011 Golden Disc Awards – Girls’ Generation’s Digital Song Of The Year
Golden Disc Awards suddenly changed its criteria and counted points for songs released from January 1st, 2011 to November 30th, 2011. This happened only in that year and most of the time, Golden Disc Awards accepts songs released from December 1st of the previous year to November 30th of the following year.
Moreover, netizens also found out that Girls’ Generation won Digital Song Daesang with “The Boys” although the song only ranked No.43 on Gaon’s Yearly Chart, while winners of other years, such as Psy’s “Gangnam Style” & “Gentleman”, Taeyang’s “Eyes, Nose, Lip”, BIGBANG’s “Loser”, TWICE’s “Cheer Up”, and IU’s “Through the Night” all ranked No.1 & No.2.
2. 2013 Melon Music Awards – SHINee’s Artist Of The Year
SHINee won the award even though their album sales and digital streams were not very outstanding that year. It was thanks to additional points from judges.
3. 2017 Melon Music Awards – EXO’s Artist Of The Year
EXO won Artist Of The Year Daesang and surpassed IU and BOL4, who ranked No.1 and No.2 on music charts with more streams. Netizens found this case questionable as IU’s digital point was very high and EXO could barely surpass her even with extra points from votes and judges.
4. 2020 Seoul Music Awards – Taeyeon’s Song Of The Year
It was pointed out that Taeyeon’s digital point was much lower than that of BTS. It was also the only year that Seoul Music Awards awarded Album and Digital Song separately.
5. 2022 Seoul Music Awards – NCT 127’s
NCT 127, whose achievements were not comparable to other artists in all categories, including Album, Digital & Vote, won Daesang.
6. 2022 Genie Music Awards – NCT DREAM’s Artist Of The Year & Album Of The Year
Those are the only categories they could win against Lim Young-woong
7. 2022 Seoul Music Awards – NCT DREAM
They won Daesang without ranking No.1 in Album & Digital
