On the morning of December 5, dating rumors involving BTS’s Jungkook and aespa’s Winter exploded across Korean and international social media, with fans quickly dissecting alleged “evidence” such as matching accessories, tattoos, Instagram patterns, and earphones.

While neither Big Hit Music (under HYBE Labels) nor SM Entertainment confirmed or denied the rumors, both issued ambiguous responses, stating they had “no stance on the matter.” The lack of clarity further fueled speculation that the idols may be romantically involved.
However, the timing of the rumors has triggered a wave of skepticism. Many netizens are now pointing to a possible conspiracy, suggesting the dating story may have been strategically leaked to deflect attention from a more serious issue: the legal scandal surrounding HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk.

According to online users, the Jungkook–Winter rumor began trending approximately 20 minutes before South Korean media outlets broke the news that a Seoul court had frozen Bang Si-hyuk’s HYBE shares, worth $107 million, amid an ongoing investigation into alleged IPO fraud.
HYBE has been under scrutiny since July, when South Korean police raided its offices as part of a broader financial investigation. Authorities suspect that in 2019, Bang misled early investors by denying any plans for an IPO, encouraging them to sell their shares to a private fund connected to him. However, documents later revealed that HYBE was secretly preparing to go public.
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has referred the case to prosecutors and requested criminal charges against Bang, citing violations of the Capital Market Act. Under South Korean law, fraudulent gains over 5 billion won (~$3.8 million) can result in life imprisonment or a minimum of five years in prison.
While some fans are celebrating the potential new K-pop couple, others are questioning the sudden media storm. Theories suggesting that the dating rumors are being used as a distraction have gained traction, especially given the timing and the idols’ popularity.
“This feels like media manipulation. A scandal of this magnitude involving HYBE’s chairman could have major consequences — and now everyone’s busy talking about tattoos and headphones,” one user commented on X (formerly Twitter).
There are also growing concerns that other idols may be used in similar ways to deflect attention from ongoing investigations, though no evidence currently supports this claim.

Jungkook, born Jeon Jungkook in 1997, debuted with BTS in 2013 and has since become one of the most recognizable figures in K-pop. Known as the group’s “Golden Maknae,” Jungkook has consistently drawn public attention, including rumors linking him with Lisa and Rosé (BLACKPINK), Shin Hyunji, and actress Lee Yu Bi.
Winter, born Kim Minjeong in 2001, debuted with aespa in 2020. As a lead vocalist and dancer, Winter has become a standout member in one of K-pop’s top fourth-generation girl groups. Her clean-cut visuals and strong stage presence have earned her widespread admiration.

While the dating rumors between Jungkook and Winter remain unconfirmed, the controversy has sparked a broader conversation about media manipulation and idol privacy in the K-pop industry. Meanwhile, the investigation into Bang Si-hyuk and HYBE continues, with potential legal repercussions looming.
As fans await clarity from both agencies and legal authorities, the line between entertainment news and corporate scandal appears blurrier than ever.
