On November 4, People magazine officially crowned Jonathan Bailey as 2025’s Sexiest Man Alive, marking a historic moment as the first openly gay man ever to receive the title. The announcement aired live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Speaking to People, the 36-year-old British actor shared his surprise and gratitude: “It’s such an incredible honor — and honestly, a little ridiculous,” he laughed. “I haven’t told anyone yet… except my dog.”
The magazine praised Bailey for his “refined charm, humor, and a face that feels unfairly handsome.”
Bailey rose to international fame through his role as Viscount Anthony Bridgerton in Netflix’s Bridgerton series. Since then, he has become one of Britain’s most versatile actors, moving seamlessly between stage and screen.
His recent achievements include an Emmy nomination for Fellow Travelers, portraying Prince Fiyero in the 2024 musical film Wicked, and an upcoming lead role in Jurassic World: Rebirth.
Born in rural Oxfordshire, England, Bailey is the youngest of four siblings. He discovered his passion for acting at just five years old after watching Oliver! with his grandmother, and two years later, he made his stage debut with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Despite his success, Bailey remains humble and relatable. He admits to being “terrified of snakes,” preferring quiet nights over loud parties, and even enjoys building LEGO sets on dates.
“The most important things in love are communication and honesty,” he said.
Bailey confessed that he often tears up over small, heartfelt moments — especially when it comes to family.
“My niece was just named Student of the Week, and I nearly cried. My sisters send me photos of their kids all the time, and it always makes me emotional.”
In 2024, Bailey founded The Shameless Fund, a global charity supporting LGBTQ+ organizations.
“I want to help remove the shame and fear so many still live with,” he said. “There are countless talented people afraid to be themselves — I just want them to believe they can.”
He describes himself as an overthinker who tries to avoid reading online comments, instead focusing on gratitude and positive connections.
When asked what advice he’d give his 15-year-old self, Bailey replied: “Get ready for an incredible journey. It won’t always be easy, but it will be worth it. Trust your instincts — they’re always on your side.”
Looking back on his path, Bailey shared a message that resonated deeply with fans: “Life’s a journey for everyone, no matter where you start. What matters most is looking around along the way — and if someone needs a hand, reach out and lift them up.”
