Ji Suk-jin: “I regret my father’s life-sustaining treatment… It’s not the life a patient wants”

In episode 2 of tvN STORY’s “Anti Agym” which aired on April 13th, Ji Suk-jin, Park Joon-hyung, Song Young-kyu, Choi Gwi-hwa and Lee Ho-cheol appeared to talk about secret concerns and problems that are difficult to overcome. On this day’s broadcast, Ji Suk-jin began talking about “life-sustaining treatment”. Life-sustaining treatment refers to treatment that simply extends the life of a patient who is in the process of dying.

Ji Suk-jin brought up his story, “My father died while he was in the hospital. He was in good condition, but he suddenly had symptoms such as shortness of breath.” He continued, “The doctor urgently asked, ‘Do you want him to receive life-sustaining treatment?’ At that time, I didn’t even know what life-sustaining treatment was. The doctor said, ‘If he doesn’t receive life-sustaining treatment now, he’ll die at dawn, so please make a choice.’ After thinking about it, I replied, ‘Okay.'” Ji Suk-jin added, “It was the first time I saw my father’s fearful eyes when deciding on life-sustaining treatment. However, the life after life-sustaining treatment was not what the patient wanted. My father lived for another 4 months after that, but he had a hard time during that period.”

Song Young-kyu asked, “Will you choose life-sustaining treatment if you go back to that time?” Ji Suk-jin answered firmly, “I won’t.” Song Young-kyu showed a different position, saying, “I would do it. From a child’s point of view, I think I’ll try to help my father live a little longer.” Park Joon-hyung shared his thoughts, “The opinion of the person involved is important. Isn’t it the same as forcing me to work out when my body is in pain right now?”

Ji Suk-jin talked about his own standards for life-sustaining treatment. He said, “It’s okay to think about intubation in sudden situations such as a traffic accident or if you’re young because it’s for the purpose of treatment. However, I think it’s right not to receive life-sustaining treatment if you have a long-term illness or you’re old.”

Meanwhile, “Anti Agym” airs every Wednesday at 8:20 PM.
