Jeon Somi’s New Single Sparks Debate: Accusations of Copying BLACKPINK

Netizens are questioning the creativity of Jeon Somi's agency

Solo artist Jeon Somi announced her upcoming return to the music scene.

She is set to release her summer special single “Ice Cream” on August 2nd. However, this news has elicited mixed reactions from the public.

Devoted fans are eagerly anticipating Somi’s comeback and appreciate the concept’s aesthetic, with some even comparing it to Barbie’s style.

Yet, others have pointed out that this single and its concept seem eerily familiar.

Many netizens have noted the striking similarities to BLACKPINK and Selena Gomez’s “Ice Cream”. Not only do the songs share the same title, but the aesthetic appears quite similar as well. Fans are hopeful that the new single will not have an identical sound.

While the resemblances are hard to ignore for many fans, their affection for Somi remains strong as they look forward to her comeback.

Some fans are also defending Somi, suggesting that the similarities might not be her fault. They point out that BLACKPINK released “Ice Cream” while under YG Entertainment, and Somi is under THE BLACK LABEL, an associate company of YG. She is working with some of the same producers, like Teddy. Consequently, many are attributing the perceived lack of originality to the agency rather than Somi herself.
